Introduction

Human milk fat is a major source of energy for the breastfed infant. It also provides infants with essential nutrients and bioactive components that support health and development. In human milk, fat is present in the form of so called Milk Fat Globules (MFG). Components from the milk fat globule membrane (MFGM), such as proteins, polar lipids and cholesterol, have been linked to potential benefits for the infant’s health. In this module, you will learn about the latest scientific evidence on human milk fats and their positive effects on gastrointestinal and metabolic health, and other health outcomes such as immunity and neurodevelopment. An overview of the complex composition of the MFG and its membrane is presented, including the physiological effects of its bioactive molecules. Moreover, this module will introduce you to recent findings exploring the potential benefits of supplementing breast milk substitutes with MFGs from bovine origin.

How to best follow this module

For your own coordination and scheduling: To go through this entire module which contains 2 units, you will need about 270 minutes (about 135 minutes for each unit). Downloading further literature or using our integrated links will take additional time.

Every unit consists of a self-assessment test at the beginning, different lessons and a CME test at the end. During the course of the module, the learner will benefit from a number of learning tools, including self-assessment tests, graphics and a discussion forum.

To make better use of the teaching material and consequently a better learning experience overall, we suggest that the learner first should go through the units only after he attempts the CME tests.
